In 1988, Mother Katharine was beatified – declared “Blessed” by the Catholic Church and people started coming to pray at her tomb to ask for her intercession (to pray to God on their behalf). The Sisters would take turns sitting in the crypt area so they could talk to visitors about Mother Katharine’s life in hopes of bringing her vision of faith and justice to bear on the actions and attitudes of others. As the number of visitors increased, the Sisters realized a need for more people who would be able to help “tell the story”. Sr. Roselle Brodfuehrer, SBS began to coordinate “Honor Guards”– lay people who would dedicate themselves to being in the Chapel before the Blessed Sacrament as well as praying at the crypt. Presently there are about 100 Honor Guards who rotate their duties of welcoming visitors, praying before the Blessed Sacrament and answering question people might have about Mother Katharine and her mission.
For more information about becoming an Honor Guard, call Sr. Patricia Downs, Shrine Director, at 215-244-9900 ext 402.
