One hundred and eighty successful GSAT applicants became a part of history on Monday, September 1, 2014 when they started classes at the new Mount St. Joseph Catholic High School (MSJCHS) in Mandeville. The grant-aided, denominational high school is a collaborative effort between the Catholic Diocese of Mandeville, the Sisters of Mercy, and the Ministry of Education, to address the deficit of quality secondary school places in the parish.

As chaplain, Sr. Jane Nesmith is in charge of the spiritual aspect of the high school, supervising devotion and liturgy practices, and ensuring that the children participate in such seasonal practices as the Stations of the Cross. She also teaches a class in Christian Living to all seventh grade students.

Louise and Edward Morrell and St. Katharine Drexel chose two adjacent and lovely tracts on the James River for St. Emma's and for St. Francis de Sales Academies to educate young Black men and women. The schools closed during the early 1970, but the wooded hills, rolling fields, wetlands and rich farmland remain. The pre-Civil War mansion is the center of activities on the property. Its archives preserve the site's rich history; the Workshop Way office and the Thomas Berry Educational Center reach beyond Virginia to enrich minds and hearts. A community garden provides nourishing food for the poor who frequent outreach centers. Wetlands and streams are monitored and scientific studies of flora and fauna are periodically being done. These things happen because many people — alumni, neighbors, and church, civic and scientific organizations — are involved.

St. Joseph Church was erected by the Spanish around 1699. The church, rectory and convent form an enclosed square at the top of the hill above the town. The pueblo men cut the large beams for supporting the church's ceiling from the mountains and moved them without the help of modern machinery to the village to construct the ancient building. The surface was hand plastered with adobe and white washed making it visible for miles.
